The Cauldron

The fall of Ramadi has generated an intensification of Islamist
sectarian rhetoric to dangerous new heights.

The Islamic State Sunni conquerors of Ramadi fired the first shots on Twitter with a rare message from Caliph and ISIS leader Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi calling on the mujahedeen to persevere until Baghdad and Karbala are liberated like Mosul and Ramadi. IS commanders are shown celebrating and vowing the next battle will be in Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf. If these cities fell to the Islamic State it would be like the Dome of the Rock falling into Christian or Jewish hands…a disaster.

IS began broadcasting their own media while trumpeting the defeat of ‘the cowardly Safavids” on media kiosks set up throughout Ramadi. The latter reference is to the 16th Century Persian Shia Safavid Empire that gave birth to the Shia Twelver Sect—hated by the Sunnis.

On May 20th Tehran News reported that Moqtada al-Sadr warned the ISIL terrorists that Iraq would be their graveyard if they attacks the Shia shrines in Karbala, Najaf, Baghdad and Samarra. Karbala and Najaf hold two of Shia Islam top three holiest sites. He added, ‘we will fill Iraq’s land with their rotting bodies’ if they desecrate the holy places.

The Iraqi plan to retake Ramadi revolves around the commitment of Shia militias led by trusted commanders. It is to get underway as soon as possible and it’s a near certainty that Qasem Soleimani’s henchmen will be right there overseeing the fight.

This superheated rhetoric is more than just talk; it’s the gaping chasm that’s been growing between the Arab Sunni world and Persian Shia world; the Abbasids and the Safavids. Ramadi is beginning to take on the form of an Islamist Stalingrad where two sworn enemies will meet and fight to the death. The next few weeks and months may well see one the bloodiest internecine battles within Islam since the original 7th Century Sunni-Shia schism.
