The nexus between Crime Drug Trafficking Organizations (DTO) and Terrorists is well documented with the Hizballah and Taliban DTO connection being the most prominent. The groups share smuggling routes used for the moving drugs, weapons and people.
A rising concern is the connections between the Latin American drug cartels and Al Qaeda and/or the Islamic State. The concern is a repeat of the Hamas Tunnel War (Operation Protective Edge,2014). Hamas used tunnels to slip into Israel seeking to blow up buildings from below, launch ‘hit squads to gun down civilians and to snatch hostages.
AQ and IS watched and IS has its own tunnels used to evade coalition bombing. The LATAM cartels have extensive tunnels that connect Mexican warehouses to American Warehouses. Dan Gordon, a writer and IDF Reservist, posits that ISIS could use a LATAM tunnel to send truck bombs into American cities.
It’s a real concern given AQ’s lust for headlines and IS’s lust for blood.
