The fallout in Yemen continues. Three AQAP leaders have been killed by drones this year; Harith bin Ghazi al-Nadhari, Nasser bin Ali al-Ansi and, most recently, Nasir al-Wuhayshi AQAP’s leader and conduit to Ayman Zawahiri. Many saw Wuhayshi as Zawahiri’s successor to run Al Qaeda. AQAP executed four members for leaking information to the US; two were crucified, two were shot. AQ claimed they were working for IS.
Now we wait to see if similar allegations come from North Africa where AQ affiliate, Mokhtar Belmokhtar, was killed days before Wuhayshi.
If moles are giving up AQ leaders, it could be an Islamic States plot. In the jihadi world, leaders swear an oath of loyalty to their bosses called bayah. The oath is from leader to leader not organization to organization and is binding. When a leader dies his replacement reaffirms bayah or offers it to another boss.
The Islamic State may be creating opportunities for terrorists to shift support from AQ to IS by killing leaders tied to Zawahiri thru bayah. Cynical and smart.
